Most of what I’ve written here has come from the other side.

The reflective side.
The learning side.
The part of me that can step back and make sense of everything I’ve been through and say, “I’m getting better.”

And I believe that.

I’ve been through a lot.
I’ve done a lot of work.
I should feel good about what I’ve accomplished.

And I do.

But I also still feel like a failure sometimes.

I still cringe at decisions I’ve made.
Some of them recent. Not just ancient history I can distance myself from.
I still catch myself thinking I should be further along than this.

And right now, if I’m being honest, I’m depressed.

Not in a poetic way. Not in a reflective, wrapped-up-with-meaning way.

Just in it.

It feels like something heavy and dark running through me. Like black goo in my veins. Everything slows down. Everything feels heavier than it should.

And this is the part that scares me.

Not because I think this *is* forever.

But because I’ve lived enough of my life in depression to know it *can feel like forever* when you’re in it.

When you’ve spent years in that place, every low spot feels dangerous.
Like a deep pothole you’re not sure you’re going to climb out of this time.

That fear is real.

Even when you “know better.”

Even when you’ve done the work.
Even when you have language for it.
Even when you’ve proven to yourself before that you can get through it.

There’s still a part of your brain that whispers:
“What if this time it stays?”

So this isn’t a pity party.

I’m not asking for anything.
I’m not trying to be saved or reassured.

I’m just doing the thing that’s been helping me lately—writing it out loud.

Because on most days, I’d go head to head with this.

I’d challenge it.
Push back.
Break it down.
Find meaning in it.

But not today.

Today I’m just acknowledging it.

Depression is a horrifying thing to live with.
And sometimes the strongest thing I can do is not pretend I’m winning when I’m clearly in the middle of it.

It hasn’t won.

But I’m not winning today either.

And maybe that’s okay.

Maybe this is still part of getting better.

I can hope tomorrow feels lighter.

And for now, that has to be enough.
