So what happens after the last hope doesn’t work?

What happens when you’ve tried the medications, the procedures, the “next big thing”… and you’re still here, feeling mostly the same?

That’s where I found myself.

Again.

---

Years ago, when I wrote about going through VNS, I ended it with something like:

*You never know what the future holds.*

Back then, I meant it in a hopeful way. Like maybe the next treatment, the next breakthrough, the next thing… would finally be it.

I don’t think I see it that way anymore.

Not exactly.

---

It’s not that I’ve lost hope.

It’s that hope changed.

---

For a long time, I thought “working” meant something very specific.

It meant the depression lifting.
It meant clarity.
It meant feeling like myself again.

Like that first medication I took. The holy grail.

That became the standard.

And everything after that felt like failure because it didn’t measure up.

---

But over time, something started to shift.

Not all at once. Not in a big, obvious way.

Slowly.

Almost invisibly.

---

I’ve spent years in therapy.

Different therapists. Different approaches. Different styles.

And for a long time, it didn’t feel like it was doing anything.

I would go. Sit down. Talk. Try to explain things I didn’t fully understand myself.

Sometimes I’d leave thinking:
*What was the point of that?*

Sometimes I’d leave feeling worse.

Like I had just opened things up without actually fixing anything.

---

There’s this expectation with therapy that you’re going to have some kind of breakthrough.

A moment where everything clicks.

That didn’t happen for me.

At least not in the way I thought it would.

---

Instead, it was repetitive.

Uncomfortable.

Sometimes frustrating.

Going over the same patterns again and again.

Hearing things I didn’t necessarily want to hear.

Trying to apply things that didn’t seem to make a difference in the moment.

---

And for a long time, I honestly believed:

*This isn’t working either.*

---

But something was happening.

Just not in a way I could see right away.

---

It showed up in small moments.

Catching a thought before it spiraled.
Pausing instead of reacting immediately.
Recognizing patterns I used to just live inside of without question.

Having language for things that used to just feel like chaos.

---

It didn’t fix me.

It didn’t take the depression away.

But it gave me something I didn’t have before.

A way to interact with it.

---

The same thing happened with medications.

They didn’t bring me back to that “holy grail” feeling.

But some of them helped just enough.

Took the edge off. Kept me afloat. Made things a little more manageable.

Not a cure.

But not nothing.

---

And then there’s the part that doesn’t get talked about enough.

People.

Friendship.

Connection.

The moments where someone checks in. Where someone sits with you. Where you’re not completely alone in your own head.

That matters more than I used to admit.

---

At some point, I had to face something I didn’t want to believe.

There wasn’t going to be one thing that fixed this.

No single treatment. No breakthrough. No switch that flips and everything changes.

---

No one thing was coming to save me.

---

And weirdly… that didn’t make things worse.

It made things clearer.

---

Because if nothing was going to come in and fix everything…

Then maybe this wasn’t about being fixed.

Maybe it was about building something that works.

Piece by piece.

Medication.
Therapy.
People.
And something else that’s harder to define.

---

Resilience.

Not the motivational kind.

The quieter kind.

The kind that just keeps going.

The kind that shows up again after things don’t work.
And again.
And again.

---

Am I perfect now? Am I cured? Have I found the holy grail?

Not sure.

I still take a boatload of meds. I still see a psychiatrist.

I still have plenty of dark days.

Days when existential dread slips in.
Days where I don’t want to do this anymore.
Days where I feel like I don’t belong in this universe. Like I just want to get away.

Days where everything I’ve built that works feels like it’s crumbling.

Days where I cry out for help.

Because yeah… I get lonely.

---

There’s a phrase I heard once:

*The only way out is through.*

The first time I heard that, it didn’t feel comforting.

It felt like pure terror. Panic.

Like there was no escape.

---

But over time, that meaning changed too.

It’s still true.

It’s just not something I hear with fear anymore.

---

I used to think resistance meant fighting the depression and winning.

Now I think it means something different.

---

It means staying.

Even when nothing is working the way it’s supposed to.

Even when the progress is small.
Or unclear.
Or invisible.

---

Right now, I’m the most stable I’ve been in a long time.

Not cured.

Not fixed.

But stable.

---

And for a long time, I didn’t think that would be enough.

Now I think it might be.

---

*Resistance isn’t futile.*

*It just looks different than I thought.*

*I didn’t lose.*

*I just misunderstood what winning looked like.*

---

*If any of this feels familiar, you’re not alone.*
